26 Oct The A-List: The Last Minute Melbourne Cup How-To
Melbourne Cup day has snuck up on us again! It’s one of the best days out of the year and if you’re a last minute Larry, we’ve put together a quick guide to get your race on by next Tuesday.
Where To Go
Tickets to most of the usual Melbourne Cup events have already sold out but we know a couple of places that have some left – but be in quick, because lots of other people like you are looking for tickets at the last minute.
Eye Magazine are hosting a VIP Melbourne Cup lunch at the Stamford Plaza, Auckland. Tickets are $220 each and include a flute of champagne on arrival, a three- course lunch, fashion show and live screening of the races throughout the day. Bookings can be made by emailing email@example.com or call 09 912 3006.
Mr Toms is also hosting an event including a glass of bubbles on arrival and a three-course lunch with wine matches. With Clarke Gayford DJ’ing from 2pm and prizes from Ingrid Starnes, Mumm champagne and Deadly Ponies, tickets are a steal at only $100 each. Buy tickets from EventFinda.co.nz.
Head in The Game
Snap up an easy last-minute piece from Natalie Chan, Smith & Caugheys or Modes.
If you’re feeling creative (or cheap), buy a basic piece from Farmers, Decjuba or Equip and head to your nearest florist, Kmart or Spotlight store to add to it and create your own bespoke piece. All you need is a hot glue gun to put it all together. We know someone who made this for Melbourne Cup last year in 15 minutes – total cost $25, from LookSharp.
What To Wear
Honestly, we say wear whatever you’ll be comfortable in all day. Melbourne Cup Day is one of our favourite days of the year and as seasoned veterans we can tell you brand new shoes, too tight Spanx and anything too tight in general will take away from the day.
A good fake tan and an LBD will always work. If you’re looking for an excuse, guaranteed favourites can be found at Cooper by Trelise Cooper, Flo and Frankie, Moochi, Portmans, Storm or Forever New. Stand out in cold shoulder styles, florals and prints, or wear a jumpsuit and avoid a Lindsay moment.
The Finishing Touches
If you can get your hair and makeup done, what a perfect way to kick off your day! Dry & Tea can whip up a quick blow dry from $49 but be prepared to go in early as bookings from midday are hard to come by this close to Melbourne Cup day. Phoenix Cosmetics do make up from $55 for half an hour. If you’re a dab hand with your own makeup, spend the time getting your eyes, contouring and base done, and finish the rest off at home.
If you’re doing it all yourself, you’ll find plenty of inspo on Pinterest and easy how-to’s on YouTube. Some essential products we love include Mellow Cosmetics Lip Paint, Schwarzkopf Amino-Q Hair Spray, Morgan Taylor Nail Lacquer.
Lastly, it isn’t race day without a glass of bubbles, and you can definitely start early while you’re getting ready. Pop open a bottle of Akarua Brut Methode – put on your power song and get in the zone!
