The A-List: A Beginners Guide to Gelato

One thing we all agree on at TGPR is gelato is always a good idea, no matter the weather. Here in Auckland we are spoilt for choice when it comes to the sweet treat, so here is our guide to gelato joints not to be missed on your next dessert run.

taka beach

Takapuna Beach Café
Takapuna

Arguably sellers of the best damn salted caramel gelato you’ll ever try, The Takapuna Beach Cafe boasts gorgeous views of the North Shore to take in while licking your cone. Regular Supreme award winners for their gelato, you can’t go wrong with the chocolate-hazelnut or licorice, or if you’re feeling decadent the salted caramel milkshake is other-worldy.

downlomilsead

Milse
Britomart

Only a few years old, patisserie Milse already has a cult following of dessert lovers. Their delicate gelato sticks come in various flavours including strawberry and pistachio crumble or Bourbon vanilla, marshmallow and cookie. Alternatively, the Verrines are layered desserts from heaven, we highly recommend the Santillia chocolate.

casa

Casa del Gelato
Parnell

This modest store tucked away in a Parnell laneway is a hidden treasure. Creators of premium artisan gelato, Casa del Gelato sells crowd favourites like Tirimisu and Ferrero Rocher, with the option to pair your gelato with some waffle goodness. There’s plenty of seating hidden around the corner, and make sure to get a picture in-front of their famous flower wall.

giapo

Giapo
Queen Street

A little bit fancy, Giapo Haute Ice-Cream is your gelato version of couture. From the ‘chouxaron’ (a macaron topped with choux pastry) to the invention of warm ice-cream, Giapo promises a gelato experience like no other. Flavours change daily as the chefs are inspired –even more reason to visit often.

Kapiti Store

The Kapiti Store
Shortland Street

Nestled in the hustle and bustle of the CBD, The Kapiti Store offers a sweet, gelato-filled moment for the ice-cream connoisseur.  Filled with all the favourites from their range, you won’t be short of choice. Word of warning – the Black Doris Plum and Crème Fraiche flies out the freezer so get in there early! If you fancy a spot of lunch the store also provides mouth-watering toasties made with cheese from their delicious range.
