20 Aug The A-List: Out And About In Auckland – Treats, Activities And Entertainment In The Big, Little City
What’s Happening In The Big Little City?
As tempting as it may be to stay snuggled up in bed this weekend, be sure to get out and about in the big, little city! There’s heaps to do – from the exciting and action-packed, to the relaxing and entertaining. And if you simply can’t convince yourself to leave the house, there’s lots to do and see that’s coming up over the next week or so too.
Nothing brings about that childish look of wonderment and awe on the faces of many than the fun of the circus and no one does it better than Zirka Circus – New Zealand’s very own amazing act and the first contemporary circus to be owned and operated by a woman! From the dare devil stuntmen, to the hilarious clowns, to the mesmerising acrobats, there’s something to keep everyone entertained and on the edge of their seats. Zirka Circus are touring up and down the country with their new show ‘Cross the Ocean’, catch them in Henderson this weekend, or Takapuna the following weekend, but be in quick. The perfect outing for friends, couples and families.
Late and Live at The Classic Comedy Club
Every Friday and Saturday night The Classic Comedy share with us their cheeky Late and Live show. The night consists of four to five high-quality comedians showing you their stuff for 90 minutes. The Classic Comedy Club is our go-to when we need a pick-me-up, a good night or are just keen for some laughs. This ‘adults only R18’ show is the best way to start off or round-off a great night in this city of ours. Round up a group of friends and head over for a very entertaining evening.

Ebisu is the Japanese god of daily food and fisherman. It also happens to be on the tastiest, contemporary restaurants in Britomart. Chefs at Ebisu fuse together classic Japanese food and flavours in a modern and European-inspired style. The exposed brick aesthetic is refreshing and chic, while not detracting from the beauty of the food on every plate. We love the signature dish Hamachi Kingfish Sashimi platter, but the Seared Cambridge duck breast is hard to go past. Check them out and let us know what you think!
So Spa in the Sofitel hotel is the perfect place to relax, recuperate and rejuvenate if you’ve had a rough week. Incorporating classic French cosmetology with the natural essence of New Zealand, So Spa’s expert therapists have a range of treatments available depending on if you pampering, relaxing, cleansing, or all of the above! This is the ideal girls day out, couples retreat or me-time activity.
Auckland Art Gallery
The Auckland Art Gallery is our go-to when we need something interesting and culturally stimulating on the weekend. There’s always an exhibition that is interesting, quirky, classic, mesmerising or intriguing and we’re loving Lisa Reihana’s in Pursuit of Venus. This exhibition is all about New Zealand’s rich history and culture, inspired by Joseph Dufour’s 1804 Les Sauvages de la Mer Pacifique 20-panel scenic wallpaper. Reihana’s version includes interactions between Polynesian and European cultures and highlights the complexity of their relationship. This is a beautiful addition and artistic interpretation of New Zealand’s history and one that should not be missed.
Balanced Living Centre Transformation Hatha Yoga
If the weekend really took it out of you or if you just want your Mondays to be a little bit better, we recommend going to the Monday morning or evening Transformation Hatha Yoga classes at the Balanced Living Centre in New Lynn. These classes are perfect regardless of if you’ve never done yoga before or are a seasoned professional. Yoga is great for improving your posture and flexibility, if you’re recovering from a muscle injury, and to help manage physical and mental stress. An awesome activity to do on your own or with a friend.
New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW) kicks off this Monday and once again is another amazing event that you definitely want to be a part of. There’s a multitude of events showcasing New Zealand fashion designers, brands and big names such as Kate Sylvester, Smashbox Cosmetics, Trelise Cooper and Sean Kelly. There’s so much to see and do, check out the NZFW website for a full list of events and shows.
