  • Big J’s Takeaway

Bij J - Blue Glory Big J

Big J’s Takeaway is a gourmet burger and takeaway joint located in the heart of

Mt Wellington and owned and operated by a qualified chef. The menu is tried

and true and there’s a burger of the week every week – last week’s was the ‘Blue

Glory’ which is prime beef patty, topped with grilled streaky bacon, sautéed

onions, baby spinach leaves, red pepper & chilli jam and a blue cheese aioli – so if

that’s anything to go by, you definitely need to check it out!

Better Burger do burgers plain and simple. Their menu is small, but that’s not a

bad thing! You can enjoy a hamburger, a cheeseburger, a double cheeseburger or

a vege burger. Accompaniments include fries – which are skin-on, crisp, crunchy

and divine, a soda or a shake. The straightforward nature is perfect and it’s open

late Wednesday – Saturday so ideal if you’re out and about in the city at night.

  • Velvet Burger

Velvet Burger is a gourmet burger joint that started off down in Dunedin in 2006

when hungover students needed something tasty the night of and something to

bring them back to life the next morning. Since then Velvet Burger has made it’s

way up the country to Christchurch and Auckland as well, offering up their tasty

fare sourced from New Zealand growers and producers. It’s very hard to go past

the namesake – the Velvet Burger. It has venison, salad, grilled pineapple, chilli

mayo and the special Velvet Relish. Even better if you add bacon!

Residing in a purpose-built burger place in Manukau, Murder Burger is all about

tasty burgers, without the artificial colours, flavours and god knows what else!

Although it may a bit of trek, it’s definitely worth the journey. We love the Spicy

Jalapeno Chicken Burger – free-range grilled chicken breat, signature jalapeno

pesto lettuce, tomato, red onion, gourmet relish and free-range mayo. This is

definitely not for the faint-hearted though!

  • Flaming Onion

The Flaming Onion is two Kiwi blokes’ humble offering to the ever-growing

gourmet burger market and they’ve got something good going on! An awesome

addition to the North Shore – we’d recommend the Beef & Cheese – flame grilled

beef, tasty cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, mustard, mayo and relish. If you’re

feeling adventurous then definitely try the burger of the week. Lots of tasty

combinations and don’t forget to try the potato rosti, handmade and a nice

change from fries.

  • Burger Burger

And now for our personal favourite – Burger Burger! While they may appear to be ‘just another gourmet burger joint’, they are so much more. Their small and perfectly formed menu makes decisions easy, especially when you know that all of the six regular options is tried, tested and tasty. The weekly special is always of the same high quality, with heaps of variations in flavour.

Our go-to is the Beef Burger with a savannah grass-fed beef patty, homemade pickles, tomato jam, mustard, and mayo, but the Pork Burger is also amazing if you want something a little bit different. 4-hour Harmony pulled pork shoulder, homemade BBQ sauce, mint slaw and mayo. There’s lots of vegan, bun free, and gluten-free options too. We would definitely recommend trying the charred broccoli side with garlic butter and almonds and their potato skins are off the chart amazing. We don’t know how, but it works! You can also feel good knowing that all ingredients are ethically, sustainably and locally sourced.

You may end up waiting a little while, but this is simply a testament to the quality and popularity Burger Burger have. Every meal is lovingly crafted, and Instagram-worthy.
