The A-List: Shaken Not Stirred, Our Top Cocktails From Around Town

The A-List: Shaken Not Stirred, Our Top Cocktails From Around Town

There’s nothing better than welcoming in the weekend with an icy cocktail and some good company on a Friday night. There are so many places to choose from though, all boasting the biggest and the best. So we’ve done the hard work for you and have handpicked our favourite cocktail spots all over the city. No matter which corner of Auckland you hail from or are headed to, we’ve got you covered for your next after work drinks or girls night out.

Here at The Generalist PR we’re all about looking out for each other and looking out for you. While we want to make sure you have a good night, please remember to stay safe. Always have a sober driver and drink responsibly.

Mama Loco

There’s something about Mexican food and cocktails – they just work! So if you’ve had a hard week, treat yourself and your colleagues with Mama’s crumbed zucchini chips and aioli, accompanied with the perfect Mexican margarita. The view from the deck catches the sunset perfectly, but once the sun goes down the interior aesthetic is vibrant and funky. Nothing’s ever dull here!

The Commons

The Commons are well known for good music and good food on the Shore. They’ve also got a reputation for exceptional cocktails, making them the perfect spot to spend an evening. Nothing will get you talking like The Chatty Bar Monkey – whiskey sour, house peat and cinnamon will definitely get your mouth warmed up. If you need to cool it down and freshen up a bit, try the Red Plum Fizz. Fresh and tangy!

Black Salt Bar

This little gem is hidden away in New Lynn and full of amazing cocktails and food too. The Border Jumper is a cheeky way to start off the evening or there’s the Bachelor’s favourite Espresso Martini… coffee and liquor – the perfect pairing!

Settler’s Country Manor

Although Settler’s is traditionally a wedding and restaurant venue, the Game Keepers Restaurant is perfect for any night of the week, special occasion or not! The cocktail menu is fairly standard and full of old classics, but the margarita they’ve concocted is something else! All the things a margarita should be, but somehow extra memorable and delicious. Definitely a must-try next time you’re out around Muriwai and Woodhill.

Goode Brothers

Goode Brothers are the place to head if you’re out East. The caramelised onion and rosemary pizza bread is a must to soak up all the delicious concoctions these brothers have dreamed up and some of them are incredible. The Apple Pie is rich and sweet and takes you back to Granny’s… in a grown up way this time! If you’ve got a sweet tooth then you can’t go past the Toblerone. Crème de Cacao, Frangelico and fresh cream – yes please!

Along with a classic cocktail menu Basalt also have a yummy non-alcoholic cocktail menu. Definitely somewhere to stop if anyone in your circle doesn’t drink alcohol, but still wants to have a good night.  There’s not much between their Mint and Cucumber Collins and their special Mojito full of mint leaves .

The Bramble

The Bramble

The Bramble brings some very different cocktails to the South Auckland area. Take for example, their hard soda range with the likes of the Crazy Pirate Float! Although there are a few wacky creations in their, their staple menu is full of trusted and well-known concoctions. Definitely worth making a trip for.

Their website is currently under construction, but check out their Facebook page for all the information you need to get there.

Republic Bar

Another South Auckland treasure. Cocktails are only available on a Thursday and Saturday night, but absence makes the heart grow fonder! A big focus on berries here, which we aren’t complaining about. Nothing is more reminiscent of summer than the memory of sweet juicy strawberries, so why not try the Kiwi and Strawberry Caprioska? Or try the Grape Martini for a fresh twist on an old favourite.

Miss Clawdy’s

Prickly Pear Margarita

Miss Clawdy’s is cocktail heaven in the CBD. With three different extensive menus – Miss Clawdy’s Classics, Southern Classics and a special Summer menu – there’s something for everyone. Southern Classics incorporate rich and warming whiskey, rye and bourdon in ways we didn’t know were possible, while Miss Clawdy’s Classics are very hard to go past with the likes of the Old Fashioned Cherry Lemonade and the Prickly Pear margarita. The Summer 2014/2015 could be up for a change as the weather starts to warm up, but we hope The Avenue doesn’t go anywhere – calvados, slow hand white whiskey, apple juice, passionfruit and lemon. YUM!

No one does a margarita better than the Mexicans and what better place to get the perfect one than from Mexico? With three different margaritas – Mexico City, Coconut, and Black Plum AND a make your own option, you can’t go wrong.

If tequila isn’t your forte though, Mexico also have an interesting and fruity cocktail menu. Try the Blueberry and Basil for the perfect blend of sweet and savoury.

As very responsible hosts, Mexico have a full menu of traditional South American treats. Lots of spice and plenty of allergy conscious options.

Bellini Bar is the Hilton Hotel’s gift to Auckland city – currently under renovation, but definitely one to keep an eye out for in the near future. The only things here that look better than the view of the stunning Waitemata Harbour and city skyline are the cocktails. Staff can prepare any classic cocktail on request, but there’s so many unique and exciting options that you have to try something new! The Mango and Vanilla cocktail is an unexpected but ingenious combination, much like the Kiwi in Tennessee… If you’d like to make your own magic at home there are interactive cocktail classes where Bellini’s expert mixologists let you in on a few tricks of the trade. Definitely a must for your next team bonding activity!
